Somerville Man Secretly Videotaped Women In Bathroom, Bedrooms

The 34-year-old was sentenced Thursday for filming women in their bedrooms, getting into and out of the shower and having sex with him.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A Somerville man was sentenced Thursday after being convicted of secretly taping multiple women, sometimes in various states of undress, the Middlesex District Attorney's office said. Teddy Browar-Jarus, was convicted June 8 of 25 counts of secretly recording a person in a state of nudity, 11 counts of willful interception of oral communication and one count of attempting to commit a crime.

Authorities say in 2015, a woman who knew Browar-Jarus awoke to a beeping noise coming from her bookshelf. She searched the shelf and found a cell phone with its camera facing her bed. The home screen of the phone said "Teddy," according to the DA's office.

Police searched Browar-Jarus' bedroom and found multiple electronic devices and the remains of a broken "hook" camera, which is designed to look like a plastic hook commonly found fastened to bathroom doors. On his laptop authorities found videos of women entering and exiting the shower in two separate bathrooms, videos of his female roommates in their bedrooms and videos of him having sex with women that were recorded without their consent, according to the DA.

"This defendant committed the ultimate invasion of privacy by intentionally recording women in various states of undress without their permission or knowledge," Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. "This type of behavior takes away the sense of security and the right to privacy that we are all entitled to."

Browar-Jarus was sentenced to two years in the House of Correction with one year to serve and the balance suspended for five years. He was also sentenced to five years of probation and ordered not to contact the victims or identify them publicly, pay restitution to the victims, perform 100 hours of community service and continue to seek counseling.
