Somerville Pub Lease Dispute 'Moving In Right Direction'

The bar and its landlord are "actively negotiating" its lease, which expires at the end of the month and would force the bar to close.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A lease issue between a popular Somerville pub and its landlord is moving toward a possible resolution, according to one of its owners. Brian Manning, who co-owns Bull McCabe's in Union Square with Chris and Linda Whitney, wrote on Facebook that both sides are now "actively negotiating."

"Our landlord is open to movement on his way-too-high number," Manning wrote. "Not enough, yet, and there are many wrinkles to agree upon, but we are moving in the right direction."

The owners previously said they signed a 10-year lease with a five-year option and planned on executing that option. But last year, their landlord said they needed to renegotiate the lease terms.

"There's a discrepancy in the lease that he says means one thing when for ten years, my partners and I have believed the opposite," they wrote on Facebook in late May. "That may end up in lawyers' hands. We think we're right. He thinks he's right. Hence, the lawyers."

Bull McCabe's has been operating out of 366 Somerville Ave. since 2008. If the two sides do not come to an agreement, Bull McCabe's will close June 30 when the 10-year term expires.
