UPDATED: Winchester Murder Suspect Caught in North Carolina

Matthew McAveeney allegedly killed his 70-year-old mother.

Matthew McAveeney, the man wanted for murder in connection with the death of his 70-year-old mother, Barbara McAveeney, in Winchester last week, was apprehended Tuesday in Belmont, North Carolina, according to WBZ.

Authorities recently charged McAveeney, 46, with murder, in addition to the initial charges filed against him: armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a person 60 years of age or older, assault and battery and two counts of cruelty to animals.

“Today, police officers in Belmont, N.C. arrested Matthew McAveeney on a murder warrant, for allegedly killing his mother, Barbara McAveeney. A Winchester detective will accompany representatives of the Middlesex District Attorney’s office to North Carolina as soon as possible, in order to begin the process of returning Mr. McAveeney to Massachusetts to account for his alleged crimes,” said Winchester Police Chief Kenneth C. Albertelli.

“I am pleased with the amazing level of cooperation and hard work shown by police across multiple jurisdictions, who worked together to ensure that this alleged killer would not remain on the loose. This was a horrible crime, and all we can do as police officers is ensure that justice is served,” he added. 

Winchester Police found his mother’s body on Oct. 14 during a well being check at her Swanton Street residence.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the cause of death to be “blunt force trauma to the head and the manner of death was homicide.”
