Here are some of the most popular bars, restaurants and bakeries in and around Detroit that closed in 2023.

METRO DETROIT — Multiple bars, restaurants and bakeries in metro Detroit closed for various reasons in 2023.

Some of the businesses cited lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, while others noted a struggle to hire employees.

Star Bakery, Oak Park

Star Bakery, known for their Jewish baked goods, will close its location on the Coolidge Highway in Oak Park on July 2. The bakery was founded in 1915.

Lost River, Detroit

Lost River, located on Mack Avenue just east of Alter Road, said it's temporality shutting its doors to figure out how to retool and reimagine the space and its potential.

Awrey's Bakery, Livonia

The owners of Awrey's Bakery, located at 12301 Farmington Road in Livonia, said they plan to close down for good in September, unless another buyer purchases the bakery.

Greek Islands Eatery, Plymouth

Plymouth's Greek Islands Eatery will close down on Jan. 16 after serving the community for 10 years.

Jolly Pumpkin, Royal Oak

Jolly Pumpkin, which opened in August 2017 in the former Bastone Brewery and Vinotecca Wine Bar, announced Sunday it was closing for good and that a new brand, called Bandit Tavern and Hideaway, will take over with a new culinary concept starting Friday, according to the post.

Starbucks, Detroit

The coffee shop on Woodward and Mack avenues, near Whole Foods, permanently shut down Sunday. The store opened in 2006.

Motor City Brewing Works, Detroit

Motor City Brewing Works will permanently close its taproom at 19350 Livernois Ave. just north of Seven Mile Road on Sunday, Oct. 1, according to a Facebook post. The Livernois Avenue location opened in 2021.

Hilton Road Cafe, Ferndale

Hilton Road Cafe, located at 3150 Hilton Rd, just south of 10 Mile Road, closed down after 15 years of serving food in the community. The restaurant was best known for serving an array of breakfast items, along with soups and sandwiches.

Boneyard BBQ, Livonia

Boneyard BBQ in Livonia is closing down for good just after the New Year, the restaurant announced in a Facebook post.

Burger Kings, Metro Detroit

Dozens of Burger King locations across metro Detroit closed in 2023. A few locations reopened in August.
