MINNESOTA — Former Vice President Joseph Biden is the projected winner in Minnesota’s Super Tuesday Democratic presidential primary, both the Associated Press and NBC declared. Biden received a significant bump in the Land of 10,000 Lakes after Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota dropped out of the race and endorsed him Monday night.

Sen. Bernie Sanders will likely finish in a close second place in Minnesota. However, the come-from-behind win for Biden is a sign that his campaign is gaining steam following his victory in Saturday's South Carolina primary.

Turbulent events preceded Minnesota Senator's exit

Following her sixth-place finish in South Carolina's Saturday primary, Klobuchar was forced to cancel a campaign event in her home state after protesters swarmed her stage at St. Louis Park High School on Sunday night. The activists demanded that a man convicted of murder while Klobuchar was Hennepin County Attorney be released from prison.

Protesters say Myron Burrell, a man sentenced in the 2002 murder of an 11-year-old girl, was wrongfully convicted.

Late last month, after the case began to resurface in the news, the current Hennepin County attorney issued a statement defending the conviction.

"Myon Burrell was convicted by prosecutors in this office not once, but twice," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a recent video.

"Contrary to some reports, this was solid police investigation and prosecution. We believe the right man was convicted in this heinous crime."

Freeman said if new evidence in the case comes up, his office will review it.
