Alleged Abuser Tracked Down in Manchester

Concord Police allege that Courtney Barrett choked, assaulted woman after fight about use of her car.

A local man with previous arrests around Concord was recently picked up again on a number of charges, including a second-degree assault charge.

Courtney B. Barrett, 42, last known of Canton Circle in Concord and formerly of Manchester, was arrested at 11:07 p.m. on Oct. 27, and charged with felony second-degree assault, simple assault, conspiracy to commit unauthorized use of a propelled vehicle, and false imprisonment.

According to an arrest report and court affidavit, officers were called to Canton Circle for a domestic assault allegation, as first reported on the Concord NH Patch Facebook page.

The officers spoke with a woman who alleged that Barrett had “strangled and assaulted her.” Concord Fire and Rescue teams were called to the scene for medical assistance with the officer noting that there were visible injuries.

“I could make out what looked like two hand impressions to her skin because the skin was white in color and looked as if pressure had been applied to that general area of the neck,” the reporting officer wrote.

The officer also reported damage to a screen door to the backyard.

The woman alleged that Barrett took her Toyota Avalon the day before and hadn’t returned with it despite her texting him requesting her vehicle back, since she had to pick up her daughter. Later, Barrett reportedly arrived after noontime and the two began arguing. She said she needed her car back but Barrett allegedly wouldn’t give it back to her, saying he needed to get back down to Manchester.

The woman walked out of the home to speak with a neighbor about picking her daughter up when she saw her car down the street with a Hispanic looking woman in the driver’s seat. The woman went out to confront the other woman, with Barrett allegedly following her, requesting she get out of her car. The other woman refused repeatedly. Barrett reportedly apologized to the Hispanic woman and said he would take care of the situation.

Barrett and the victime continued to argue as she walked back to the house. Once inside, Barrett allegedly locked the door and wouldn’t let her get out and reportedly stated, “I see why you went through what you went through before,” referring to other domestic attacks the woman had sustained in 2012, including death threats.

As she attempted to leave the home from the back, Barrett allegedly “grabbed her by the neck with both his hands and threw her on a red couch” that was to the left of the slider door. He was allegedly on top of her, strangling her, according to the report.

The woman was able to break free and get out of the house, at first, but Barrett allegedly “grabbed her by her right upper arm and pulled her back into the residence.”

Neighbors began to gather in the backyard after hearing Barrett allegedly yelling at the woman stating “n----- get over here” and “get your f------ a-- in here” repeatedly in “threatening tones.” One witness called 911 while another person ordered Barrett to let go of the woman. The witnesses then moved around the woman so that he wouldn’t grab her again and he left.

Concord Police and New Hampshire State Police put out be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) calls for the vehicle and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Oct. 27, Manchester Police picked up Barrett on a warrant and a Concord officer took custody of him there. He was held without bail.

In the last two years, Barrett has been arrested a number of times for driving while intoxicated, bail jumping, and a bench warrant.
