VT Man Shot By NH State Trooper Gets Off Light
Bryan Evans pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal threatening in Concord yesterday but only received suspended sentences.

CONCORD, NH — A man who led New Hampshire State Police on a chase on I-89 in May after stealing his mother’s car in Vermont pleaded guilty in court yesterday to charges, according to WMUR-TV. Brian G. Evans, of Quechee, VT, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal threatening and one count of disobeying a police officer. He was sentenced to 36 months in jail, all suspended, and two years probation, according to the report.
Evans stole his mother’s car on May 19, 2017, after she dropped him off at the Lebanon Police Department in the hope that he would get help for an alleged heroin problem, according to the DailyUV.com. Instead, an hour later, he returned to the home, smashed his way in, stole her car keys and then her car, and headed to Boston to score, according to the mother’s claims.
Vermont State Police alerted New Hampshire troopers that the vehicle was stolen and heading into the state. State and local police caught up with the vehicle in New London and attempted to stop it but Evans refused. Police attempted to stop the vehicle with strips and the vehicle stopped just past Exit 7 in Hopkinton.

Evans, according to numerous witnesses who took cellphone footage of the incident as well as police, raised his hands pretending to have a weapon and was shot at first by a New London police officer, who missed, and then another trooper, who had a firearm malfunction. The original trooper following the vehicle then shot Evans in the leg twice. Evans then jumped back into the Toyota and drove south a short way before stopping and giving up.
According to the Caitlin Andrews’ Twitter feed, Judge Richard McNamara, after finding out that Evans had a bachelor’s degree remarked, “Why would you do something so stupid?” The Concord Monitor reporter noted that Evans replied, “I wasn’t thinking.”
