Public Safety Is Garwood Mayor's Top Priority For 2021

"The greatest tragedy we suffered in 2020 was the loss of 2 Garwood residents who were accidentally struck by vehicles," said Mayor Todisco.

GARWOOD, NJ — As the new year gets underway, Garwood Mayor Sara Todisco outlines her plans for 2021 including public safety — which is her top priority.

"The greatest tragedy we suffered in 2020 was the loss of two Garwood residents who were accidentally struck by vehicles when they were walking," Todisco said.

On Dec. 2, 2020, Catherine Flint, 81, from Garwood was fatally hit by a car while crossing the street. On Jan. 30, 2020, Nedra I. Clark, 65, from Garwood also died from her injuries she got when she was hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk.

As a result, Todisco asked the police chief and police commissioner to present two reports within 30 days of the last council meeting on Dec. 10.

One report will be on what measures the Borough can take to improve safety at intersections and the other on what support and education can be offered by the Borough to pedestrians.

"I fully support implementing significant safety measures in early 2021," said Todisco.

Todisco said she also plans to prioritize Garwood's local response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Part of that response is continuing to keep residents informed with accurate information about the number of cases, resources available, and in the near future, how to get the vaccine if desired. Another major part of the COVID-19 response is continuing to promote shopping local. Our local businesses have given back to Garwood in a variety of capacities over the years and now is the time for us to make it a point to shop local and help them," said Todisco.

"It is a priority for me to welcome our new residents and businesses at that development," said Todisco.

Garwood will host its annual Re-Organization meeting on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
