Coyotes Spotted Near Memorial Park In Fair Lawn: Police

Authorities urge residents to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — Coyotes were reportedly seen in the woods near Memorial Park Tuesday, police said.

Authorities urge residents to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.

In suburban and urban areas, coyotes have occasionally attacked small pets, said the state Division of Environmental Protection (DEP). Attacks on people are rare, the division said. They may cause property damage and threaten human safety if they get too close or comfortable with people.

If a coyote is spotted during the day that exhibits no fear of people or if a coyote attacks someone, contact the Fair Lawn Police Department at 201-796-1400 or the DEP at 908-735-8793.

Coyotes have become more commonplace and aggressive in recent years.

Aggressive coyotes were seen twice in Saddle River County Park last year.

A coyote attacked and bit a man walking his dog in Norwood in 2015 tested positive for rabies. The animal was later found and euthanized.

A female coyote and a den was found near a Norwood school later on that year.
