Fair Lawn Man With Synthetic Marijuana Arrested: Police

John Schmitt, 39, was on the street asking people for money before police arrested him, authorities said.

FAIR LAWN, N.J. — A "suspicious man" who was asking people for money Sunday afternoon was arrested after police found evidence of drug use on him, police said.

Officer Geovanny Buitron responded to Broadway and Fair Lawn Parkway on a report of the suspicious man and, after an investigation, arrested John Schmitt, 39, of Fair Lawn, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

Police found the evidence in Schmitt's backpack and in his pocket, Metzler said.

Schmitt was charged with possession of synthetic marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and had a warrant for his arrest issued out of Elmwood park for $1,018, police said. Schmitt was turned over to the Elmwood Park Police Department.
