NJ Towns With Sex Offenders At Halloween: Where Are They?

Before kids go out trick-or-treating for Halloween, fall is a good time to take an inventory of who is living in your neighborhood. Patch put together maps in 79 towns – using the New Jersey State Police Sex Offender Registry – to identify where sex offenders live (see below).

New Jersey's registry lists only Tier II and Tier III offenders, or those who are considered at risk of committing another offense. Tier III is the most serious and considered a high risk. We only created maps for New Jersey towns that have Patches.

You may want to avoid trick or treating at these houses and apartments on Halloween, or merely be aware of who's living in your neighborhood during the rest of the year.

The New Jersey State Parole Board in 2015 barred registered sex offenders from passing out candy on Halloween and instituted a curfew. In 2017, that curfew was from 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 to 6 a.m. on Nov. 1, according to NJ.com. Information on a 2018 curfew was not yet available.

Law enforcement officials and researchers caution that the registries can play only a limited role in preventing child sexual abuse and stress that most perpetrators are known to the child. The U.S. Department of Justice, which oversees the National Sex Offender Public Website, estimates that only about 10 percent of perpetrators of child sexual abuse are strangers to the child.

The Justice Department estimates 60 percent of perpetrators are known to the child but are not family members but rather family friends, babysitters, child care providers and others, and 30 percent of child victims are abused by family members. Nearly a quarter of the abusers are under the age of 18, the department estimates.

• Berkeley Heights: Berkeley Heights currently has one registered Tier 2 - moderate risk sex offenders listed on the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Berkeley Township: The Berkeley Township area has 29 registered sex offenders listed on the New Jersey State Police Sex Offender Registry.
• Bernardsville: Bernardsville has one registered Tier 2 - moderate risk sex offender listed on the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Bloomfield: There are 20 registered sex offenders living in Bloomfield as of October 2018, according to the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Bloomingdale: There are seven registered sex offenders living in Butler, Kinnelon and Bloomingdale as of October 2018, according to the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Brick: Brick Township has 23 registered sex offenders listed on the New Jersey State Police Sex Offender Registry.
• Bridgewater: Bridgewater currently has seven registered Tier 2 - moderate risk sex offenders listed on the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Butler: There are seven registered sex offenders living in Butler, Kinnelon and Bloomingdale as of October 2018, according to the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Cedar Grove: There are three registered sex offenders living in Cedar Grove as of October 2018, according to the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
• Cherry Hill: Cherry Hill currently has 17 registered sex offenders listed on the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry.
