A State Police vessel, commanded by Staff Sgt. Christopher Wozniak, used side scan sonar to find the boat, which was near near buoy 14, closer to the beach, State Police said.
Authorities have not released any information about who may have been aboard the boat, but on its Facebook page, the Belford Seafood Co-op said the captain of the fishing trawler is believed to have been the lone occupant of the vessel.
“We pray for his safe recovery,” the Tuesday night post said, adding that the captain had recently been docking his boat in the Belford section of Middletown.
Family members identified the captain as Tom Andresen, according to WABC.
His sister told the television station that he has two children and two grandchildren, and the family has not heard from him since the boat was seen going under.
The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday said State Police found debris believed to be from the boat that sank.
A life ring and a cooler were found in the area, WCBS reported.
The NYPD dive team had also been at the scene, using side scan sonar to try to find the 40-foot fishing trawler, the Coast Guard said late Tuesday.
A crew from another boat reported seeing that trawler sinking around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to WABC.
