B.F. Gibbs Opens for Another School Year

Gibbs Gazette columnist Tina Youngs returns to Patch

Happy Back to School to all the Gibbs faculty, students and families!  I feel like I just submitted the last “Gibbs Gazette” for the summer and now here we are back in the classroom.  I hope everyone had a fun and restful summer break.  For me, it always goes by way too fast!

While we were all sitting in the sun on vacation, the Gibbs staff was busy preparing for the new school year.   All the classrooms were emptied and cleaned prior to the teachers coming back to set up in August.   A new media specialist was hired to replace Mrs. N. who went up to the High School as the new District Data Coordinator and all the teachers were trained in a new anti-bullying program that has been enforced by the state.

Among the exciting updates the students were able to see when they arrived on Sept. 7 were 28 new computers in the media lab.  Also, the installation of at least one SmartBoard at each grade level is nearly complete, and the Science Room is constantly being updated with new and exciting experiments. Even the fish tank has four brand new occupants!

The new PTO Executive board held the annual Boo Hoo breakfast for all incoming kindergarten parents after drop off on the first day and they had their first PTO meeting on Sept. 7. They did a great job getting the school year off to an informative start for all who attended.

They are planning two fundraisers this month, a cupcake sale on Sept. 23 immediately after school and a car wash on Sept. 24 behind the Borough Hall.  Please go out and support them and remember to send in your PTO membership.

Back to School Night took place on Sept. 15 and as always it was very well attended.  The gymnasium was packed with eager parents waiting to hear all about what is in store for their children this year at Gibbs and the classrooms were already displaying projects the students have made in just this short time being in school.

As you all know, the students at Gibbs were to complete and hand in summer projects this year in math and reading.  These projects were displayed at Back to School Night and it was nice to see how many students participated and how very creative they all were.

I am hoping that this year will be a fun and exciting one for the students at Gibbs.  We certainly started off with some excitement with Hurricane Irene giving us an extra day of summer vacation and way too much rain and flooding to handle.  But now the sun is shining and the waters have receded and we can get started on enjoying a wonderful new school year at BF Gibbs School.
