Westwood Girls Track Ready for Next Level of Competition

The Lady Cardinals compete in Old Bridge Thursday and North Carolina later this month

The girls on the track team have been making a lot of people proud and have achieved an enormous accomplishment. Members have qualified for the National Scholastic Championships in Greensboro, N.C., which is a very big deal, almost like high school Olympics.

Head Coach George Glover is beyond pleased and proud of his team.

"The girls had a lot to live up to this season, and have really performed beyond expectations," said Glover. "We competed well in some New York State meets, established ourselves with county leading performances at the Penn Relays and won our divisions in the League and County championships"

Glover went on to explain that the team set five new school records, finished a very close second in the State Sectional Championship and did well at the Bergen Meet of Champions. "Twelve girls are all Big North, six are first team all-county," he said.

"We are led by some very determined and hard working girls at the championship level," said Glover. "Michelle Cascio and Meghan Kocher, seniors, have the experience and the will to win that helps to keep everyone going. Juniors Dana Bianchi and Gabby Sloezen are versatile and elite performers. Sophomore Alexandra Cimino is the best hurdler in North Jersey right now, and she is getting better. Rebecca Fasano, another sophomore, is a very cool and steady relay performer. Lastly, there is freshman Corinne Myers a current sensation in distance running."

The girls have had some incredible moments and are looking forward to making even more memories in Old Bridge and in Greensboro.

"To do well at the Penn Relays, the largest and oldest track meet in the country was a career highlight, not just this season," said Glover. "Winning the Bergen Meet of Champs 4x400 relay in school record time was also a thrilling end to our local competition."

Glover said his team is ready to go to the top level. "A top three relay finish in the State Meet of Champs is easily possible, and the girls are hoping to contest for a victory. At the National Championship, we are prepared and ready for a level of competition that will push these runners to their ultimate bests," he said. "Then, we'll power down and prepare to try it all again next year."

The National Championship is exciting for the team, but there are always obstacles, including finals, prom and graduation. It is also an expensive journey, but with the help of a very generous and supportive community, the girls will be on their way to show everyone that it is all worth it.
