Westwood Loses Heartbreaker
The Westwood Cardinals lost on a last minute home run to the Warriors of Waldwick 14-12
Wednesday marked the opening games for the 2011 Bergen County Baseball playoffs pitting 19th ranked Westwood against 16th ranked Waldwick. Starting in the third inning, Westwood opened up a 3-0 lead when Westwood's Tom Vorvalakos stole home. Waldwick, not to be out done, mounted a comeback after Westwood pitcher Chris Carroll gave up a three-run home run. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the sixth, Westwood blew the game wide open off the bat of Vorvalakos who drove in five of Westwood's nine runs, hitting a solo home run and a grand slam.
Trying desperately to hold onto their lead in the bottom of the seventh, Westwood switched pitchers and the wheels began to fall off, giving up an early three-run home run and walking in three more. Hanging onto a slim two-run lead with two out and the bases loaded, Joe Bates of Westwood gave up a grand slam giving Waldwick a 14-12 victory and ended any idea of a Cinderella run by Westwood.
