Deer Park Firefighters Battle Edgewood Preserve Brush Fire

Over 250 firefighters battled a large brush fire in Dix Hills and Deer Park on Saturday.

The fire began in Dix Hills and spread south into Deer Park due to low humidity and high winds, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the Edgewood Preserve, near property adjacent to Commack Road, around 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters from two-dozen departments across Long Island helped battle the blaze. Heavy-duty “Stump Jumper” trucks were requested, from as far as Holtsville and Bethpage, to gain access into the thickly wooded preserve.

The multiple fires were brought under control around 5:15 p.m.

There were no injuries and no structures were damaged in the fire.

Dix Hills fire chief Robert Fling and Deer Park fire chief Larry Bradbury were in command of the units battling the blaze.

Suffolk County Fire-Rescue Coordinators responded to the fire with mutual aid, truck staging and crew assignments. The Suffolk County Police Department was requested for a helicopter, which was able to relay information on the fire conditions to the fire chiefs.
