The Montauk Movie Closes Its Doors After 30 Years

The theater/CinemaCycle closed down for good on Monday.

CinemaCycle and Montauk Movie closed their doors on Monday after 30 years of service.

The owners of the establishment, located on 15 S. Edgemere Street, announced earlier last month that they would be closing but have kept offering their daily classes and movie fundraisers up until Monday, Dec. 1.

“Our family has enjoyed every minute of bringing movies to you for the past 30 years and helping you to burn off those movie concession calories every morning at spin classes for the last year and a half,” owners David and Maureen Rutkowski said in a press release.

The theater decided to add spin classes in June 2013, receiving a positive response from the community.

“The two offerings - movies and spin - have complemented each other well,” the Rutkowskis wrote in the release.

However, the owners will finding it more difficult to keep up with the changing technology and found their 35mm movie projection equipment had become obsolete.

While the owners thought about converting to digital projection equipment, according to the press release, they felt that with the high conversion costs and the year-to-year decreases in the amount of people attending the theater, they could not continue to operate a seasonal movie theater.

The theater hosted their last screenings this past Friday, showing both Elf and The Rocky Horror Picture Show to benefit the East Hampton softball team.

“We thank you for your patronage and your kind words,” the Rutkowskis said.
