Wearing decorated aprons, kindergarteners in Susan Raebeck’s class not only had a great time serving their parents bagels, fruit and muffins at the opening of their restaurant, called KR, on Friday, Dec. 12, but also learned about math, patterns, reading, writing and the restaurant industry.
For the past 18 years, Raebeck, a Sag Harbor Elementary School teacher, has been intertwining the kindergarten curriculum with the opening of a restaurant where students are required to not only serve their parents and clear their plates, but also take orders using their writing skills.

The students also practiced their order-taking skills by serving fifth-graders during a soft opening of their restaurant on Thursday, Dec. 11.
To learn more about restaurants, they visited Pellegrino’s in Southampton where they made their own pizza pies.
