Report: PSEG Failed to Notify Residents of Insulating Fluid Leak

About 7,000 gallons of dielectric fluid was recovered, but some may have already seeped into Island Park waters, officials said.

Thousands of gallons of dielectric fluid used to insulate power lines leaked into Hog Island Channel off Island Park last Monday, according to News 12.

PSEG confirmed about 7,000 gallons of the “ high-grade mineral oil” used to cool cables were recovered from the ground of Hog Island Channel, according to the report.

Officials said they immediately alerted Coast Guard and Department of Environmental Conservation but not homeowners who live nearby, according to the report.

PSEG said it was “ learning” from the incident.

Should we have done a notification? We’ll absolutely reflect on that,” said PSEG Long Island CEO Jeffery Weir, according to the report.

Up to 200 gallons may have seeped into the water before the cleanup, the report claimed.

The leak was temporarily repaired Tuesday, according to Newsday. Coast Guard and environmental officials will continue observing the area.
