Man Fatally Struck by Suffolk Police Car Responding to 911 Call
Accident occurred in Islip Saturday night, police say.

An East Meadow man crossing the road in Islip Saturday night was struck and killed by a Suffolk County police car that was responding to a 911 call nearby, police said.
According to police, 54-year-old Craig Schiffer was crossing Main Street, just west of Islip Town Hall, at 10:34 p.m. when he was hit by the police car that had been traveling east on Main Street in response to a 911 call in East Islip.
Schiffer was transported by Islip Exchange Ambulance Company to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The police car, which was occupied by two officers, was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. The officers were not hurt in the accident.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
