Adelphi University Cancels Classes As Coronavirus Precaution

The college is cancelling classes until March 22 as a precaution as the virus continues to spread around Long Island.

GARDEN CITY, NY — Adelphi University has become the latest college to close as the novel coronavirus continues to spread across Long Island.

The school announced late Tuesday that it was cancelling classes starting today. There are no cases of the virus tied to the school, but it is taking the move "out of an abundance of caution." Classes are cancelled today through the rest of the week. Next week is the school's spring break.

Adelphi said it is closing its main campus in Garden City, as well as its satellite campuses in Suffolk, Manhattan and the Hudson Valley.

When class would resume on March 23, the school will be conducting online classes instead of in-person classes until further notice.

Adelphi is the latest college to announce closures due to the coronavirus. Hofstra University announced on Monday that it was cancelling classes for a week. Nassau Community College cancelled classes today after the school had a positive association of the virus. And Molloy College also announced it was cancelling classes until March 28 out of caution.

As of this morning, there are 31 confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Long Island: 25 in Nassau County and 6 in Suffolk.
