Grasing Sentenced in DWI Crash That Killed Brittney Walsh

Babylon man faced a judge on Monday.

Michael Grasing, the Babylon man who had a blood alcohol content of four times the legal limit in the 2012 crash that killed Lindenhurst teen Brittney Walsh, was sentenced to 10 2/3 to 30 years in prison on Monday, according to a News 12 report.

A Suffolk County jury found Grasing, 34, guilty of second degree manslaughter in November. He was acquitted of the top charge against him of second degree murder.

Grasing was driving with a blood alcohol content of .32 when he rear-ended Walsh’s SUV on Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst, causing the SUV to flip multiple times and strike a utility pole in June 2012, officials said.

Grasing was also found guility of leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated DWI, failure to stay in a designated lane and speeding.

Grasing apologized to the Walsh family during his sentencing on Monday, Newsday reported.

“It hurts me every day that I caused the death of this beautiful, young girl,” he said, according to the report.

Walsh’s mother, Cheryl Walsh, told Newsday after the sentencing, ”“There is no apology for his actions.”

Walsh, who graduated from Copiague High School two days before the fatal crash, was 18 when she died. She was a student-athlete who was involved in track and soccer as well as the National Honor Society and student council and she planned to head to York College in the fall of 2012 to study sports management.
