Emergency Department to Open in Long Beach in July

Facility to open this summer, officials confirm.

An emergency department is expected to open as summer goes into full swing in Long Beach.

“Today, South Nassau Communities Hospital responded to our demands, and committed to investing the funds necessary to convert the existing urgent care center at the Long Beach Hospital site into a 911-receving emergency room by July 2015,” said Assemb. Todd Kaminsky in a statement Wednesday.

SNCH plans to open a free-standing emergency department with the ability to accept ambulances by July 1, according to the Long Beach Herald. Hospital CEO Richard Murphy confirmed the plans Wednesday after public pleas for updates from Kaminsky and the Long Beach City Council.

The cost of the project is estimated at $4.5 million, according to the report.

“Despite our win today, however, South Nassau still must do more to restore proper medical services to the island,” Kaminsky wrote on his Facebook page. “Today I look forward to a safer summer in our community; tomorrow we will continue our fight to make sure that Long Beach Hospital a fully functioning hospital again.”
