Long Beach to Discuss Report on Emergency Services
After Hurricane Sandy and loss of Long Beach Medical Center, city to address public safety at meeting on Tuesday.

Long Beach officials will present the findings of a report on emergency services within the city at a meeting Tuesday night.
The report, compiled by International City/County Management Association Center for Public Safety Management, reviewed the city’s resources to help find the best way to provide emergency services to Long Beach.
“Due to the geographic isolation of all communities situated on Long Beach Island, coupled with traffic and weather implications, many citizens have expressed serious concerns regarding the timely provision of emergency services,” the City said in a statement.

Long Beach officials commissioned the report in light of the loss of Long Beach Medical Center, which declared bankruptcy after suffering critical damage in Hurricane Sandy. The storm was the final blow to the center, which was replaced by an urgent care clinic.
“Given the uncertainty regarding the fate of the hospital and the status of a 911 receiving emergency room, the City took its next step in its sustained advocacy to bolster emergency services by hiring an expert consulting firm to perform a full-scale evaluation of its emergency response needs,” city officials said in a statement. “The consultants have assessed the City’s current emergency response needs to have helped identify options for enhanced emergency services going forward.”
