DA: Man Sentenced in Fatal West Hempstead Beating

West Hempstead man fatally beat an acquaintance outside National Wholesale Liquidators in 2012, DA said.

A West Hempstead man was sentenced Thursday for brutally beating an acquaintance to death in 2012, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Bruny Fenelon, 32, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison followed by a five-year period of post-release supervision, the DA said. Fenelon was convicted in December 2013 of second-degree murder and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the DA said.

On Aug. 2, Fenelon began arguing with acquaintance Michael Rambaran, 39, of West Hempstead, outside National Wholesale Liquidators, the DA said.

The argument escalated into a physical altercation,” said Police Inspector Kenneth Lack just after the incident. “When...[Rambaran] fell to the ground,...[Fenelon] began to viciously punch, kick, and stomp him in the face, neck and head, causing his death.”

Rambaran was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. Fenelon fled and was arrested in his home, cops said.

“The brutal and gratuitous violence of this attack showed that this defendant had no mercy for his victim,” said DA Kathleen Rice in a statement. “His efforts to delay being held accountable showed no respect for Mr. Rambaran’s family, but now he will pay for his crimes for a very significant amount of time.”
