Two School Threats In The Hudson Valley: New York State Police
Threats of violence at school have been escalating nationwide.

Violence and threats of violence have been escalating at schools across the United States including the Hudson Valley. This week, New York State Police State Police were called to two Greene County high schools.
In the first, a student was reported with a gun; in the second, a student had said he was going to blow up his school.
In the 2017-18 school year, more than 3,659 threats and incidents of violence occurred in K-12 schools across the country — a 62 percent increase from 2,085 threats in 2016-17, according to an analysis by the Educator’s School Safety Network, a national non-profit school safety organization.

In the first Greene County incident, investigation revealed that a 16-year-old boy did indeed bring a gun to school Monday. Police said he brought a BB gun to the Hudson Career and Technical Education Center and then to The Cairo-Durham High School. However, there was no indication that the BB gun was loaded or that the student had any ammunition with it, police said.

Based on the student’s age and the circumstances of the case, there were no charges filed and any discipline will be handled by school administrators.
In the second, a 17-year-old student at Coxsackie-Athens High School posted a video on social media indicating that he was going to blow up his school, police said.
Investigators with State Police K-9 units swept the school, and found no explosive devices.
The student was taken into custody and charged with Making a Terroristic Threat (a class D Felony). He was arraigned in the Town of Coxsackie Court where he was released to his parents. State Police were assisted by the School Resource Officers from both the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the Village of Coxsackie Police Department.
