MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Mount Vernon High School student was sentenced on Tuesday for the killing of a rival Mount Vernon student while the city celebrated a state championship.

Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced Tuesday that a 15-year-old was sentenced to three to nine years of prison after pleading guilty to felony manslaughter in the first degree last month, for the April 2022 fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Kayla Green in Mount Vernon. The offense carries a maximum sentence of 3 1/3 to 10 years for a juvenile offender in New York.

Although her identity has been widely reported by media outlets, neither the police, nor prosecutors have publicly identified her because of her age.

"A teenage defendant senselessly took the life of Kayla Green, and in doing so, left a community devastated," DA Rocah said. "As a family and the Mount Vernon community remain in mourning, I want to reiterate my commitment to working with our vital community partners for meaningful violence prevention and intervention, especially for our youth. I know that nothing can cure the pain of losing a child. My Office will do what it can within the bounds of New York’s laws to seek accountability in these cases."

On April 8 of last year, the whole city came out to honor the Mount Vernon High School Knights basketball team's state championship and undefeated season. However, shortly before 4 p.m., after the school celebration turned violent, the teenager stabbed Green, a Mount Vernon High School sophomore, in the abdomen with a knife on Gramatan Ave. in Mount Vernon. Green was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she was pronounced dead.

Mount Vernon police arrested the teen defendant later that evening in Dobbs Ferry, following an investigation, with assistance from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.

The teenager was also charged in connection with the stabbing of another teen at the scene of the incident. Under NYS law, at the time of the defendant’s plea, those additional charges were dismissed due to the defendant’s age.

The case was before Judge Susan Cacace in Westchester County Youth Part, and was prosecuted by Homicide Bureau Chief Lana Hochheiser and Bureau Chief James Bavero, both of the Trials and Investigations Division.
