The victim, whose name YPD is not releasing, is a 27-year-old resident of Yonkers. He is an NYPD officer who was off-duty at the time of the incident. The man was treated and later released from a local hospital. No other injuries or property damage were found.
Shortly after the incident, the Yonkers Police Department was able to identify a vehicle wanted in connection with the shooting and, with the help of the Westchester County Police Department and the Westchester County Real-Time Crime Center, were able to locate the vehicle in Port Chester.
Around 4 p.m. on the same day, the Yonkers Police Department, along with members of the Westchester County Police Department, the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, and the Port Chester Police Department, took a person of interest into custody without incident.
The investigation continued over the following days, resulting in the formal arrest Thursday evening of 30-year-old Bryan Martinez of Port Chester.
Police say they determined that the targeted attack stemmed from a personal dispute between the victim and Martinez, who were known to each other as acquaintances through family members.
Martinez was charged with second degree attempted murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, and second degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is currently at the Yonkers City Jail and will be arraigned in the City of Yonkers Criminal Court on Friday.
"We do not stand for acts of violence in this City, let alone violence that amounts to gunshots being fired at an off-duty Police Officer," YPD Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said. "I applaud our Detective Division for their outstanding work and for living up to their remarkable case-closure rate with this arrest. We thank our law enforcement partners in this County and with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for once again working with us to solve this case and remove yet another violent offender from our streets."
