Former Coach Indicted On New Child Sex Abuse Charge: Rockland DA
Police and prosecutors continue to encourage victims to come forward.
ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — Joseph Lewin, a longtime gymnastics coach convicted in 2019, has been indicted based on a new accusation of child sex abuse, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced.
Lewin, 71, once a well-known coach in Rockland, was arraigned before the Honorable Kevin F. Russo on one count of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the Second Degree, a felony. A temporary order of protection was issued in favor of his victim.
Lewin had owned The Gym (A.k.a. Joe’s Gym), at 143 Rt. 59 in Hillburn, and The Gym at 7-11 Suffern Place in Suffern. Both of these gyms are no longer in business.

With this new charge, prosecutors allege that between 2012 and 2015, Lewin sexually abused a girl under the age of 13 at his gym in Hillburn.
Lewin, a former Port Chester resident, had admitted in 2019 to engaging in sexual contact with other young victims between 2007 and 2014.

Law enforcement officials encourage anyone with information to contact the Town of Ramapo Detective Bureau (845 – 357-2400 Ext. 4356) or the Special Victims Unit of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office (845-364-2800).

"We are asking the public if you have been victimized by the defendant or have any information to please come forward and contact law enforcement," Walsh said. "While nothing will erase the trauma and grief suffered by a victim, my office is dedicated to getting justice on their behalf and supporting them as they move forward."

Based on the current charge, he was sent to Rockland County Jail after the arraignment. His next appearance is Oct. 18.
The investigation was handled by the Ramapo Police Department with the assistance of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Special Victims Unit. Executive Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Devlin is prosecuting the case.
