Falling Tree Killed Westchester Man On Thruway Friday: Police

The Briarcliff Manor resident was one of two Hudson Valley residents killed by trees during Friday's nor'easter.

GREENBURGH, NY — Police have determined the fatal accident Friday on the New York State Thruway in Westchester County was due to a falling tree during the nor'easter. The victim was Barry M. Shapiro of Briarcliff Manor.

State police were dispatched to the northbound side of I-87 at about 4:40 p.m. to investigate a serious injury accident near mile post marker 11.3 in the Town of Greenburgh.

Police said Shapiro, the driver, was traveling northbound on I-87 when a tree fell from the eastbound shoulder and landed on his vehicle, which continued a short distance until coming to rest against a guide rail.

Shapiro, 67, was transported to Westchester Medical Center with serious life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, no other injuries were reported, police said.

Shapiro was one of two Hudson Valley residents killed by falling trees during the storm on Friday.
