6th Annual Dragon Boat Race Festival: Event Info

Here's what you need to know about the event scheduled for this weekend.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — The sixth annual Dragon Boat Race Festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 in Port Jefferson, the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce announced.

Rain or shine, the event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Mayor Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park, located at 101A East Broadway, Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Inner Harbor.

The Port Jeff Chamber of Commerce referred to the race festival as its signature event. There will be 30 teams competing, as well as entertainment including a martial arts performance, children's arts and crafts, Pan-Asian dance performances, Taiko drumming, Lions Dance and a closing award ceremony.

Of course, there will be food trucks serving up potstickers, veggie lo-mein, burgers, BBQ, wraps, sliders, Italian, empanadas, steak sandwiches and smoothies.

The first race will begin at 9 a.m., and three teams (three boats) will be paddling simultaneously, with teams getting in out from the PJ Village Pier floating docks at the Harbor Front Park. Races are every 12 minutes.
