First-Graders Learn To Stop, Drop And Roll

Port Jeff students learned about fire safety and prevention tips during National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7-13.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY - From Port Jefferson School District: First-graders at Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School learned about fire safety and prevention tips during National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7-13.

The students were excited to see a red fire truck arrive at the school and more excited to learn that music teacher Christian Neubert, who is a volunteer firefighter, was at the steering wheel.

Mr. Neubert introduced two members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department, Andrew Altamirano and Paul Penske, a 2018 graduate of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Together, the trio demonstrated the life-saving tools used by firefighters, shared safety tips and showed the students their fire gear before each one had an opportunity to take a look at the inside of the fire truck.
