A Lesson in World Peace
United Nations and UNICEF representative Shehab Chowdhury visits Edna Louise Spear Elementary.

Edna Louise Spear Elementary students in grades 3-5 received a lesson in world peace when they were visited by United Nations and UNICEF representative Shehab Chowdhury on Dec. 4.
Chowdhury spoke about the history and purpose of the U.N. to further the students’ understanding of the International Day of Peace, which is celebrated every September by the Port Jefferson students. Through a PowerPoint presentation, he discussed how children around the world go without clean drinking water, are malnourished and have their rights stripped away.
He told the students they could make a difference in the lives of these children right from their homes in Port Jefferson, for example, by participating in the UNICEF Tap Program, which raises money for clean drinking water.

“This was the perfect time of year to have this assembly, as our students are already involved in many different ways with giving back and helping people in need find peace,” said teacher Nancy Winkler-Brogan, who organized the assembly.
