DA: Rockville Centre Man Admits to Stealing Money from Special Needs Camp

RVC man pleaded guilty Friday to stealing funds meant for Camp ANCHOR and Project OASIS, officials said.

A Rockville Centre man admitted Friday to stealing money from special needs non-profits and financial planning clients, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Drew Morgan, 44, pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree grand larceny, a B felony, before Judge Philip Grella, the DA said. Grella committed to sentencing Morgan to between 3 1/3 and 10 years in prison. Morgan is also expected to pay full restitution to his victims, officials said.

Morgan was investigated and charged in October 2013 for stealing funds from Camp ANCHOR in Lido Beach. Officials found he had embezzled $1,159,953 from the Anchor Building Fund, Inc. while acting as its treasurer and board member, the DA said.

Investigators were led to Morgan after they uncovered bank records showing he had stolen $475,000 from two sisters for whom he was working as a financial planner, officials said.

Morgan reportedly used the money to pay for a membership in the Hempstead Golf Club, airline travel and hotel stays, restaurants, credit and debit card purchases, appliances, home furnishings and personal expenses such as groceries and gasoline.

“Drew Morgan used his position as treasurer and president of two nonprofit organizations to steal money that should have been used to enrich the lives of children and adults with special needs,” Acting DA Madeline Singas said, in a statement. “But those were not his only victims. The two sisters who handed over their money to a trusted advisor, only to have it stolen from them, are to be commended for helping to bring Mr. Morgan to justice.”

Morgan is due to be sentenced May 22.
