RYE, NY — Reminding homeowners, "your door, your rules!" the City of Rye Police Department is warning residents to beware of con men posing as contractors.

The department said that with many residents looking forward to getting home improvements done during the warm weather, there are a lot of contractors, both legitimate and a few unscrupulous actors in the area. Police want to make sure that residents do not let their guards down and become the victims of a scam.

One tactic many scam artists have used is to pose as a door-to-door salesperson claiming to be with a construction company. They often say they're a contractor with extra supplies and can offer you a great deal. These could include building supplies, painting, driveway paving, roofing or pest control. They may say that they're only in your neighborhood for the day and if you call the company for an estimate and contract, it will end up costing you a lot more.

Rye PD warns that you should never feel pressure to let them into your home. Always make sure to ask for identify, verify who they are and if they are working for a true company. It's recommended to end the conversation and then research the company yourself.

Police also warn that if you are going to answer the door, make sure that all other doors providing entry to your residence are locked. A distracted homeowner at the front door creates an opportunity for others to enter the home undetected.
