5 Things to do at Blue Point's "The Cove"
The Brookhaven Town beach and dock provides a place for many summer activities.
Corey Beach may have great food from Flo's and a great shop to get needed beach supplies, but less than a half mile away the Blue Point Cove beach and docks have a few recreational options that Corey Beach doesn't.
Here are five things to do at the newly restored Brookhaven Town beach spot:
1. Sunbathe on a quiet strip of bay beach that comes complete with a mini 'breach' for little ones to play in. It can get a bit crowded on a Sunday but nearly empty during the week.
2. Swim in a quiet spot of water, though on weekends the jet skiers can be a bit of an annoyance as they like the Cove's quiet waters as well. It's best to wear watershoes given potential glass and other items in the shallows of the bay water. And there is no lifeguard. But it's a perfect spot to just dip in, cool off and relax.
3. Grab the crab traps, drop lines, net and a bucket and your favorite lawn chair and do some crabbing now that season is in full swing. High tide is best along the dockfront. Try to do weekday mornings or evenings as the dock can get crowded on weekends. It's a fun, cheap way to have fun with the kids. Just remember to throw the females (they have a dark underbelly) and the small crabs back to keep the population growing.
4. Snapper fishing is a perfect thing to do on the Cove docks as the water is calm and it's another economical way to spend the day with a few kids. Red bobbers were seen all around the deck this weekend so best advice is to try and grab a few weekday hours or early evening time for this fun fishing option.
5. Grab an early breakfast, or lunch or dinner take-out and enjoy a true outside dining experience on the bay. There's a picnic table available under the gazebo but there is also plenty of room for a few lawn chairs dockside to watch the boats going by and the sun rising or setting.
As the Cove is a Brookhaven Town dock, a resident parking permit is required but there is plenty of parking before the parking lot and on a side street for those without a town permit.
