In conjunction with a two-week unit on penguins, Forest Lake kindergartners donned black and white clothing and placed penguin crowns on their heads to collectively celebrate Penguin Day.
As a class, the students researched the world’s different species of penguins, wrote stories about these fascinating creatures, studied sight words highlighted in the literature and analyzed graphs revealing their classmates’ favorite penguins.
At the end of the unit, the kindergarten classes assembled in the South Pole for penguin games. Separated into class colonies, the students placed a beanbag between their feet and tried to walk across the room, much like a parent penguin with an egg. They played “pass the fat” to determine how a penguin’s blubber would feel. They even tried to see if they could feel ice through a package of blubber during the “pass the ice” game. The afternoon ended with a black and white snack of Oreo cookies and milk.
