• Front Street bridge closures begin next week in downtown Wilmington (wect.com) — Drivers in downtown Wilmington should brace for overnight lane closures on the Front Street bridge between Hanover and Red Cross streets starting Sept. 8, followed by a full closure to vehicles for about six months beginning Sept. 26. A pedestrian walkway will stay open, but motorists will need to use Nutt Street or nearby streets as detours during structural repairs.

• UNCW's new research vessel opens up new waters, projects for scientists (starnewsonline.com subscription) — UNCW's new $7.2 million research vessel, the R/V Osprey, has arrived at the university's marine center in Myrtle Grove, significantly expanding Wilmington-based scientists' ability to study waters more than 100 miles offshore. Outfitted with modern labs, satellite communications, and long-range capabilities, the 78-foot vessel will support extended ocean research missions along the East Coast.
