Bucks County Service To Remember Officers Who Died In The Line Of Duty

The Police Week service will take place Monday evening, May 20 at Saint Andrew Roman Catholic Church in Newtown.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA — A public memorial service honoring Bucks County police officers who died in the line of duty will be held on Monday, May 20 beginning at 7 p.m. at Saint Andrew Roman Catholic Church on Swamp Road in Newtown.

The ceremony will begin with a procession of honor including police officers, deputy sheriffs and state troopers from throughout the county and will continue with remarks, solemn salutes and the reading of the names of the fallen.

Taps will be played and a bell will be rung for each officer who died in the line of duty.

Among the fallen remembered on Monday will be:

  • Officer Joseph E. Hanusey lll from the Plumstead Township Police Department who died in a crash 18 years ago on May 18, 2002, while responding to a call. Officer Hanusey had served with the Plumstead Township Police Department for five years.
  • Newtown Borough Police Officer Brian Gregg was shot and killed on Sept. 29, 2005, after a prisoner was able to gain possession of his partner's service weapon at St. Mary Medical Center. Officer Gregg and his partner were guarding a suspect who had been arrested earlier in the evening for drunk driving and had been taken to the hospital to undergo blood and urine tests. While in the emergency room, the prisoner began to struggle with Officer Gregg and a second officer. He gained control of the second officer's service weapon and opened fire, striking Officer Gregg in the chest. The prisoner also shot the second officer in the chest and wounded a hospital technician. The prisoner then walked up to Officer Gregg who was on the ground and shot him in the head, killing him.
  • Detective Chris Jones was struck and killed by a drunk driver while conducting a traffic stop on Route 1, near the I-295 interchange on January 29, 2009. As he was returning to his patrol car, two cars collided and careened into his vehicle, which then struck him. He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The driver who struck Detective Jones was charged with homicide by vehicle and several other charges.
  • Warrington Township Police Officer Stephen Plum suffered a fatal heart attack after having responded to a mutual aid request involving a barricaded subject in Warminster Township during his previous shift. The subject had been involved in a domestic dispute and was armed with a knife. Officer Plum had responded to the mutual aid request and stood by as part of the arrest team while controlling his canine for approximately 75 minutes before the man was taken into custody. Following the barricade, Officer Plum responded to several additional non-routine calls and conducted daily performance training with his canine partner. Officer Plum was preparing for work on the morning of May 16, 2022, when he suffered a fatal attack and collapsed.
