Council President Resigning Seat In Newtown Borough
Sue Turner has served on council since January 2020 when she took the oath of office. She has served as council president since January.

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — Newtown Borough Council President Sue Turner has submitted her letter of resignation from borough council effective September 13.
Turner, who has served as president of the six member council since January, is stepping down for health reasons, it was announced at the council’s work session on Wednesday.
Turner joined council in January 2020 after winning election to a four year seat in November 2019. Since January she has been serving on the police committee; the police pension committee; streets, lights and properties; and budget and finance. She had previously served on HARB and the Joint Newtown Historic Commission.

Earlier this year she was part of the borough’s team which successfully negotiated a fire services agreement with neighboring Newtown Township.
“She brought to the table her engineering skills and a background in compliance and through that lens she was able to do things like update policies and procedures and improve things. She really did so much here,” said Vice President Tara Grunde-McLaughlin.

The council is expected to vote on her resignation at its Sept. 13 regular meeting. Council is also expected to elect a new council president.
In Turner’s absence on Wednesday night, Grunde-McLaughlin chaired the meeting. She also announced that the borough council would be seeking candidates to fill Turner’s term, which expires in December 2023.
Candidates must be registered electors residing in the borough’s 2nd Ward and must have resided there continuously for at least one year immediately prior to being elected. Ward 2 voters cast their ballots at the Newtown, Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority.
Letters of interest and resumes should be submitted to Judy Musto at jmusto.newtown@gmail.com by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23.
Council will conduct interviews at its work session on Wednesday Oct. 5 and will vote on a resolution to appoint a new member on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The new member will also be sworn in on Tuesday, Oct. 11 following the vote.
