NEWTOWN, PA — In a spring scramble like no other, the Newtown Community Egg Hunt is scheduled to hit the ground running on Saturday, March 28 in Newtown Township.

Not only will youngsters from 0 to 18 scramble across a school field scooping up colorful plastic eggs, but so will their parents and grandparents, which makes for an interesting spectacle out on the field.

After their kids and grandkids hit the field in a series of age-group hunts, adults and grandparents get their chance in what typically ends up being a frenzied scramble across the grass.

“The zero to twos, they’re cute and nice and slow. But once you get to five and six, and seven, eight and nine, forget it. If you blink you’ll miss it,” said hunt organizer Paul Salvatore.

Then there’s the adult and grandparent hunts, said Salvatore, where his role as hunt announcer turns into more of a referee role as he utters his infamous words of advice to the older egg hunters, “Remember, your children are watching.”

Adults scramble across the field.

“They never heed my warning, but I give it anyway,” said Salvatore of one of the craziest egg scrambles you’ll ever see with adults often climbing over each other in a mad dash to collect the eggs scattered on the field.

In addition to adult participation, members of the Montgomery County Bomb Squad will be back, not to defuse any bombs, but to provide an opportunity for the blind and visually impaired to take part in the hunt.

The bomb squad will again be bringing their high tech beeping eggs to the event for a special hunt just for the blind and visually impaired taking place around 10:45 a.m.

Presented by the Newtown Rotary Club, the Newtown Community Easter Egg Hunt will unfold on the grounds of the Goodnoe Elementary School on Frost Lane.

This year, Salvatore confirmed that upwards of 8,000 eggs filled will candy and prizes will be for grabs. Members of the Council Rock ACHIEVE program are helping out by stuffing the eggs with 9500 pieces of candy.

Members of the Montgomery County Bomb Squad will again be bringing their beeping eggs to the hunt.

The eggs have been donated by the First National Bank of Newtown, with Sam’s Club providing the candy inside.

According to Salvatore, a lucky hunter in each category who finds a golden ticket will go home with a prize. Some of the prizes include gift cards to the Zebra-Striped Whale and to Nothing But Bundt Cakes

The event opens with a Meet and Greet with the Easter Bunny at 10:15 a.m. Bring your cell phones and cameras to capture the kids with the bunny.

At 10:45 a.m., the hunt for the blind and visually impaired will take place in one corner of the field. Anyone who is blind and visually impaired is invited to take part.

At 11 a.m. sharp, the main hunt begins in a series of nine age group scrambles that begin with the youngest and ends with parents and grandparents.

The hunt is free and open to the public. The rain date is Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m. If both dates are rained out, the hunt will be rescheduled for Saturday, April 4.
