Local businesses are the heart of our communities. Patch had a chance to talk with Steven Singer, President of Steven Singer Jewelers.
Patch: Tell us a bit about your business:
Steven Singer: Buying jewelry can be intimidating. Most people walk into a jewelry store and feel like they’re being sold a bill of goods. That’s why I’ve spent over 40 years on Philadelphia’s Jewelers’ Row trying to change the experience. You’ve probably seen the "I Hate Steven Singer" signs—and yeah, the other guys really do hate me—but they hate me because I’ve always chosen to put our customers first.
To me, this isn't just about business; it’s about love and trust. I’m proud to offer real natural diamonds and jewelry that lasts a lifetime, including my 24-karat gold-dipped roses. But more than that, I’m proud of how we treat people. There are no games, no fake "sales," and no pressure. I give everyone the Perfect Price from the start, backed by the Best Guarantee in the Business. I just want you to feel comfortable and confident that you’re doing the right thing for the person you love.
I’m so grateful that we’ve been able to grow and open our second home in Newtown, Bucks County. Whether you’re visiting me in Philly or out in the suburbs, my promise stays the same: I’ll always be honest with you, and I’ll always make sure that finding a gift for your loved ones is easy, genuine, and fun.
Patch: How long have you been doing business in town, or how long has your organization been around in the community?
Steven Singer: I first opened my doors on Philadelphia’s Jewelers’ Row back in October 1980. I was just a young guy with a tiny space and a big idea: that buying jewelry shouldn’t be a high-pressure headache. I wanted to build something based on real relationships and total honesty, rather than just "making a sale."
For over 45 years now, I’ve been right here in the community, through all the ups and downs. While a lot of things have changed since the 80s, my philosophy hasn’t. Whether it’s at my original home in Philly or our new spot in Newtown, I’m still committed to being the guy you can trust. I’ve spent over four decades making sure that when you’re celebrating a big moment in your life, you have a jeweler who actually has your back. It’s been an incredible ride so far, and honestly, I feel like we’re just getting started.
Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Steven Singer: I’ve always been drawn to the idea of doing things differently, especially in an industry that can feel a bit stuffy or intimidating. To me, jewelry isn't just a piece of metal or a stone; it’s deeply emotional. It’s there to mark your biggest life moments—engagements, anniversaries, or just saying "I love you."
I saw an opportunity to take the stress out of that and make the whole experience more honest, comfortable, and, honestly, a lot more fun. Getting started really came down to one thing: focusing on real relationships. I’ve always believed in standing behind everything we sell and building a brand that people can actually love and trust. It wasn't about being like every other jeweler; it was about being the jeweler I’d want to visit myself.
Patch: What's the most common piece of advice you give to customers?
Steven Singer: If there’s one thing I’ve learned since 1980, it’s that trust is everything. My biggest piece of advice is simple: don’t buy a piece of jewelry unless you completely trust the person standing behind the counter.
Buying something special for the person you love shouldn't feel like a high-stakes negotiation or a trip to a car dealership. It should be easy, it should be comfortable, and—believe it or not—it should actually be fun. If you aren't feeling that connection or if the "deal" feels too good to be true, walk away. You deserve to feel 100% confident that you’re getting exactly what you paid for, without the games. That’s why I do what I do.
Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Steven Singer Jewelers: Honestly, the most satisfying part of my job is being invited to the party. Jewelry is so much more than just a gift; it’s how we mark those huge, once-in-a-lifetime moments. There is nothing better than helping a friend—and that’s how I view my customers—celebrate a special moment. Whether it's an engagement, a first anniversary, or a "just because" 24-karat gold-dipped rose, knowing that I played a small part in a memory that’s going to last forever is why I still show up every day. After all these years, seeing the look on someone's face when they find "the one" never gets old. That’s the real reason I’m in this business..
Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
Steven Singer: It really comes down to the fact that I’m not interested in being like "the other guys." Most jewelry stores want to feel exclusive or high-end, but that often just ends up feeling cold and intimidating. I’ve always wanted Steven Singer Jewelers to feel like a place where you can just breathe.
We distinguish ourselves by cutting out the noise. While other stores are playing games with fake "50% off" sales or high-pressure negotiations, I’m focused on the Perfect Price—one fair, honest price for everyone, every day. In fact, we specialize in the real stuff—real natural Earth-born diamonds and high-quality fine jewelry—but we deliver it with a level of transparency you just don’t find very often in this industry.
We treat you like a friend the second you walk through the door, and we make shopping easy and fun. I’m proud to be the guy the competition loves to hate, because it means I’m doing right by you. At the end of the day, we aren't just selling jewelry; we’re building a relationship based on trust that lasts way longer than the transaction.
