Newtown Area Braces For Flooding, High Wind, Potential Power Outages

Police urging motorists to obey road closure signs and to be prepared for power outages.

NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown area is bracing for the storm, which is expected to hit the region beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing through early Wednesday morning. Heavy rain is expected to cause localize, creek and river flooding and high wind gusts could knock out power.

With the ground already saturated and with melting snow to the north, there's a risk of potential flooding, emergency management officials are saying. With these conditions, there's also a chance of power outages for an extended period.

  • Prepare for Flooding: Take extra precautions near creeks and rivers, or if you're in an area that has recently flooded.
  • Prepare Your Home: Clear gutters, check for any drainage issues, and secure loose items.
  • Power Up Your Electronics: Charge phones, tablets, laptops – and consider investing in extra battery packs. Stay connected even if the power goes out.
  • Emergency Kit Check: Is your emergency kit fully stocked? Now's the time to ensure it's loaded with essentials – non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
  • Evacuation Plan: If you need to evacuate, listen to emergency responders and local officials. Have all important documents gathered and easy to grab if needed.

Newtown Township

The Newtown Township Police Department is urging motorists to use caution when traversing through the township during the storm.

"We expect road closures and flooded roadways. Do not drive through flooded roads or around road closure signs," said police.

"We will be monitoring the weather conditions and provide any road closure updates as best we can."

Upper MakefieldIf the forecast holds true, Upper Makefield anticipates roadways will flood at the following

locations:

  • Eagle Road north of Stoneybrook Road
  • Stoneybrook Road at the bridge between Shannon Road and Slack Road
  • Brownsburg Road East north of Stoneybrook Road
  • River Road between Jonathan Way and Francisco’s on the River

Depending on the amount of rainfall and how quickly it falls, flooding may develop elsewhere in the township. The Delaware River is expected to crest on Thursday, Jan. 11 around noon at 13.7 feet, which is below the flood stage of 16 feet.

"Our emergency management administrator, the Upper Makefield Fire Company, the Department of Public Works, and the police department will be monitoring the situation and coordinating our efforts to ensure the safety of all," police said.

Roads will be closed at the earliest signs of flooding regardless of whether they are still passable, according to police. "We ask the you please do NOT move any barricades, cones, or signage in order to enter the road closure. The reasons for which should be obvious."

If you lose power, do not call 911 unless there is a true emergency. Bucks County 911 will not notify PECO for you nor are they able to get PECO to respond quicker.

"Our recommendation is to stay home and let us deal with the storm," said police. "You stay dry, comfortable, and safe. And if you choose to imbibe while at home, have one for us. We got you
covered."
