Newtown To Celebrate Arbor Day With Music, Hands-On Learning

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — Newtown Borough will mark Arbor Day on Friday with a celebration at Brian Gregg Park honoring trees, nature, and the environment.

Presented by the town's Recreation Board, the event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The borough has invited State Sen. Steve Santarsiero, State Rep. Perry Warren and Council Rock Superintendent Dr. Andrew J. Sanko to attend. Local students are also expected to take part, including first- and fifth-graders from Goodnoe Elementary School, along with children from God's Love Christian Preschool and the Newtown Presbyterian Church Preschool.

Arbor Day first began in 1872 in Nebraska and is now recognized all over the world as a special day to celebrate the planting and preservation of trees.

Newtown’s family-friendly event includes music by ECO Man and a series of environmental educational stations, including the Worm Guy, Shane the Aborist, the Peaceable Kingdom Petting Zoo, the Churchville Nature Center, Wild Birds Unlimited, the AARK Foundation, Newtown Rotary Club, and the Barn Nature Center.

In addition, the borough invited Goodnoe Elementary School first- and fifth-graders to create posters to help promote Arbor Day locally. Those entries were judged by Parks and Rec board president Joe Michelin, Newtown Borough Chief of Police James Sabath and Newtown Borough Mayor Tara Grunde-McLaughlin.

The first-grade winners are O'sman Mars, Fiodar Vasileauski, and James Giletto. The fifth-grade winners are Rutvik Solipuram, Lia Ortiz Saunders, and Tiffany Wu.

The judges selected their top three posters from each grade. Those winning posters will be displayed around town, and all posters will be displayed at the park on the day of the event.
