NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — The Newtown Borough Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to hire Tiffany Winik as the borough's newest full-time police officer.

Winik has worked as a part-time officer in the borough since 2021 and "has served the borough very well," said Police Chief James Sabath.

"She also has experience as a Bristol Township police officer and is currently a Bucks County park ranger," said Sabath. "They are sorry to see her go because she was an excellent employee for them. Their loss is our gain," he said. "I'm sure she'll do a very good job for us."

Among the incidents of note, the chief reported that a 45-year-old man from Philadelphia was arrested for public drunkenness after he was found sleeping in the bushes.

"Apparently he was having a fight with his girlfriend and the girlfriend said get out. And he figured, 'I'll get out and I'll sleep in the bush other here. It looks really nice," said the chief.

The chief also reported that a 36-year-old man from Langhorne was found passed out behind the Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits store following the Memorial Day Parade.

"We revived him and found out there were warrants for his arrest already so he was charged with public drunkenness as well," said Sabath.

The chief also reported that a woman who took a SEPTA bus into Newtown and then stole $1600 worth of merchandise from the CVS Pharmacy and then got back on the bus in April hit again.

"This time we got a tip. She's a woman who lives down in Philadelphia in the Kensington area so we'll be having warrants issued for her," he said.

The department also investigated several harassment calls. One was a road rage incident. Another was for a 43-year-old man from Langhorne who was arrested by police and charged with harassment. "He was entering a person's car and wanted to have an affectionate relationship. She did not feel the same. So we charged him with harassment."

Also during the month of May, the chief reported that the department had the honor of leading this year's Newtown Memorial Day Parade.

In addition, he said police provided traffic safety and road closures during the recent bridge dedication on Barclay Street. The county bridge was rededicated to the memory of U.S. Army Specialist 5th Class Frank Martin Mebs who died a hero in Vietnam.
