Newtown Storm Updates: 3,500 In Newtown Twp Without Power

As predicted, heavy snow has moved into the area. The snow has covered roads and is only expected to continue for several hours. Forecasters say since it is a heavy, wet snow, it could cause widespread power outages just days after Friday's storm knocked out electricity for thousands.

Here are the latest impacts the storm is having in the Newtown area:

  • Power outages are being reported. In Newtown Township, there are more than 3,500 outages as of 4:15 p.m. and Wrightstown has 1,200. More than 8,000 Lower Makefield residents are without power and more than 6,500 Northampton Township residents have no power. As of 3:40 p.m., total outages in Bucks County are exceeding 78,000.   • A Snow Emergency is in effect in Newtown Borough, Newtown Township and Wrightstown Township.
  • Council Rock schools are closed for the day, obviously.
  • In Newtown Township and Wrightstown Township there is no parking on the streets.
  • In Newtown Borough, residents are prohibited from parking on Snow Emergency Routes.
  • Borough residents looking for a warm meal can lace up their boots and venture through the snow to The Temperance House or Isaac Newton's. Both reported they are open. "We are open and ready to serve with smiles," the Temperance House posted to Facebook shortly after noon.
  • The Oxford Valley Mall announced it will close at 3 p.m.
  • Nearby in Buckingham Township, police are also advising residents to avoid travel on the roadways.
  • A tractor trailer skidded on the icy surface of Rt. 413 Wednesday morning in Buckingham Township, blocking the road.
  • Police have closed Rt. 611 at County Line Road in Warrington due to a jackknifed tractor trailer and other disabled vehicles. "One tractor trailer is jack-knifed, multiple others cannot make it up the hill. Please avoid this intersection and try and stay off the roads during these almost whiteout conditions," Warrington Police said.
  • SEPTA has altered its regional rail schedule for Wednesday, and several delays are already being reported. Click here for the latest on that.
  • Pennsylvania is under a state of emergency, and unnecessary travel is not advised.

  • The PA Turnpike has announced restrictions on empty, straight CDL weighted trucks, large combination vehicles, tractors hauling empty trailers, trailers pulled by passenger vehicles, motorcycles and RVs on I-76 between Harrisburg and Valley Forge and I-276 between Valley Forge and New Jersey and Pa. Turnpike I-476 between Mid County and Clarks Summit.
