Newtown Twp. Police Commend Community For Keeping Protest Peaceful

Newtown Township and Newtown Borough Police worked in collaboration with local organizers to ensure a safe and peaceful demonstration.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department is commending the community for its cooperation and commitment to maintaining peace during Wednesday evening's protest.

The protest and march, which was organized privately by a resident and shared via social media, aimed to raise awareness and express community concerns regarding the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

In a statement released Thursday morning, the Newtown Township Police Department said it "worked diligently and in collaboration" with local organizers to ensure a "safe and peaceful demonstration."

According to its statement, after receiving notification through other means, police deployed a comprehensive strategy to identify the organizer and facilitate a peaceful gathering, ensuring the protection of First Amendment rights while maintaining public safety in Newtown.

  • Open Communication: The department engaged in open dialogue with protest organizers to understand their objectives and expectations. The department also communicated with external concerned residents who had opposing views to also understand their position and concerns while communicating the police department's position in this matter. This communication helped establish a framework that respected both the right to peacefully assembly and public safety.
  • Coordinated Security measures: Law Enforcement personnel were strategically positioned to monitor the event, providing a visible presence to deter potential disruptions while respecting the right to free expression.
  • Traffic Management: To minimize disruptions to the community, the Newtown Township Police department implemented short-term traffic control measures to redirect vehicular flow and facilitate the safe passage of pedestrians.
  • Community Engagement: Officers actively engaged with protestors, counter-protestors and onlookers to foster positive interactions and address any concerns that arose during the event and to ensure safety.

"As a result of these collaborative efforts, the protests proceeded peacefully, with participants expressing their views in a respectful and organized manner," said police. "The Newtown Township Police Department remains committed to upholding the principles of democracy and protecting the rights of all community members."
