Scammers Spoofing Newtown Township Police Phone Number
The police department is urging residents not to fall for a scam spoofing the police department's phone number and asking for payments.
NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department is warning residents not to fall for a scam that is spoofing the Newtown Township Police Department's phone number.
On Thursday, police reported receiving numerous calls claiming they were contacted by a Newtown Township police sergeant requesting money for failing to appear for jury duty.
In each incident, police said the person identifies themselves as Sergeant Gilmore with the Newtown Township Police Department and states that the resident owes $8,000 in fines for missing jury duty.

The person on the phone also has known the resident's addresses, which is public information. And it was reported that the phone calls are originating from the police department number, 215-579-1000, which can be done by scammers by spoofing the number.
"Our department will not contact any of our residents to solicit any payments over the phone," police said. "We are urging our community to remain vigilant and protect your personal information. If you receive this type of phone call, do not provide any personal information (date of birth, Social Security Number, bank account information, etc.).

If you suspect the phone call to be suspicious, hang up and dial the county non-emergency number at 215-328-8524 to speak with an officer.
