Week in Review: March 4 to March 10

Extreme weather; finger-pointing over the 38 Studios probe & a freshman rep's comments about Smith Hill boozing made headlines.

NEWPORT, RI — The snow made a magical scene at Barrington Town Hall, and photographer John Jacobs captured it on Friday in a picture posted on the Barrington Patch's Facebook page.

That storm left 3 to 6.8 inches across the state, but now forecasters are talking about potential for a blizzard Tuesday.

The weather also was a factor in the sad story of two accidental deaths of 97-year-old twins in Barrington. But the story of their family history was everyone's favorite of the week.

It Was a Wonderful Life: The Barrington Twins Lived It With Grace and Joy

In politics, this was the week people had a chance to digest the long-awaited records from the state police probe into 38 Studios, which finally were released on March 2, but more questions than answers surfaced. No one was charged with a crime in the fiasco that cost the taxpayers millions. State police Col. Ann C. Assumpico has said she will not re-open the investigation unless more evidence warrants it; but last week, Assumpico also criticized the way the state police conducted the inquiry. After Gov. Gina Raimondo called the work "sloppy," former state police Col. Steven O'Donnell defended the decisions to conduct telephone interviews, in some cases, instead of in-person interviews, with key figures and not to tape all of them.

But the 38 Studios story was not the biggest political saga of the week.

Peter Neronha's resignation on Friday at midnight as U.S. Attorney drew some political fire. Democrats were unhappy Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked for resignations of Neronha and the other 45 Obama appointees.

However, the top political story came when freshman State Rep. Moira Jane Walsh, a Providence Democrat, gave a radio interview at WPRO. She complained about "insane" drinking at the state capitol. Her interview sparked national stories about lawmakers tossing down quaffs to Dominican Republic Independence Day. She later softened some of her comments, and lawmakers defended their conduct. But no word if she was invited to Newport for the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Finally, one of the most popular stories of the week on social media came out of Woonsocket where city officials announced plans to build a dog park. Harried taxpayers commented they're glad something's finally coming along for their fur babies.
