Weed, who was a standout defensive football player at Irmo High, was honored at halftime of Friday night's rivalry game against Lexington. After  being graduated from Irmo, Weed went on to star at Wofford College in Spartanburg and attended last week's close loss to Clemson.
Weed played for the Terriers from 1992-95, starting at defensive tackle and linebacker and lettered each year. He also led the team in fumble recoveries in 1995 in his final season, according to Wofford's media guide.
Weed's college coach, Mike Ayers -- an honorary pallbearer -- said he and the Wofford community are devastated at the loss.
"Tripp was a great guy. He had a heart of gold," Ayers told the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. "We're going to miss him. It's hard on a lot of people. Anybody who knew him knows that we lost somebody special."
After college, Weed parlayed his education at the private college into a successful business career. He worked in the financial services industry for 15 years, and began his career with Federated Investors, most recently working as a partner and financial advisor with James M. Dye & Associates.
According to Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman, Weed died at the scene Tuesday after his 2006 Toyota Avalon was hit by a 2008 GMC four-door pickup, driven by James Furman Prescott, 32, of Lexington.
Prescott, who was driving eastbound on U.S. 1, crossed the center lane and struck Weed's vehicle head-on, said Lexington Police Lt. Carroll Bledsoe, Jr.
The wreck happened around 6:05 p.m. Tuesday in front of Jim Hudson Ford as Weed was traveling westbound in the 1200 block of West Main Street/U.S. Highway 1 in Lexington.
The driver of the pickup was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. He was listed in fair condition the day following the wreck, but he is no longer listed at the hospital.Â
The collision and its aftermath closed down the roadway and rerouted traffic between Gibson Road and Farr Road for several hours Tuesday night.
Bledsoe told Patch no charges had been filed yet as of Friday night. The wreck, he said, remains under investigation.
